This presentation will review how the coronavirus can induce an over-reaction of the immune system. It will then talk about the specific effects on the cardiopulmonary, hematologic and neurologic systems. Special attention will be paid to management of the unique needs of post COVID patients in the immediate recovery period as well as what we know about future needs. The presentation will wrap up with a discussion of long term COVID consequences that nurses will encounter in the decades to come.

Bio: Sally Strong is the Clinical Nurse Specialist at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Hospital in Wheaton, IL. She holds certifications in Neuroscience and Rehabilitation Nursing. During a career that has spanned more than 35 years Ms. Strong has cared for patients with a variety of neuroscience disorders in the acute care, intensive care, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient settings. She has lectured extensively at the local, state and national levels on topics related to neuroscience and rehabilitation nursing. She is the author of multiple articles published in peer reviewed journals as well as chapters in 5 nursing textbooks. She has served on several national level committees and task forces for both the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses.
