Simple Adaptations to Universal Design

Modifying a home to meet the needs of an individual varies from providing simple adaptations, such as durable medical equipment and portable ramps to full remodels incorporating Universal Design principles. Deciding on the most appropriate choices depend on many factors including the individual’s function, prognosis, home environment and goals. Utilizing the Person-Environment-Occupation framework, this session will review how to incorporate client-centered practice into creating a holistic plan to achieve accessibility and function in the home.

Objectives

  • Identify at least 3 principles of Universal Design that will meet individualized accessibility needs.
  • Describe the Person-Environment-Occupation framework to assist with recommending home modifications that meet the goals and needs of the LCP evaluee.
  • Discuss when to recommend simple adaptations vs home remodeling and how to incorporate into an Life Care Plan.
